What Is The Orton-Gillingham Approach?

The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach is a structured, evidence-based method of teaching reading, writing, and spelling. Originally developed to support students with dyslexia, it is now widely recognized as one of the most effective ways to teach literacy skills to all learners.  The Orton-Gillingham approach is aligned with the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy. 


OG instruction is explicit, systematic, and multisensory, meaning students learn through seeing, hearing, speaking, and writing at the same time. Lessons are carefully sequenced so children build strong foundations in sounds, letters, and language patterns before moving on to more complex reading and spelling skills.


Because instruction is individualized and paced to each learner, students gain confidence while filling in any gaps in their reading development.


 I provide individualized, one-on-one tutoring using the Orton-Gillingham approach—an evidence-based and highly effective method for supporting struggling readers, including those with dyslexia and other learning differences. 


 Through targeted, supportive instruction, I help students develop the skills they need to succeed in reading, writing, and spelling. Flexible lesson options are available in-home and online.

Is It Only For Children With Dyslexia?

Not at all. While OG is especially helpful for students with dyslexia or other reading challenges, it benefits any child who needs stronger reading and spelling skills, extra support, or clearer instruction. Even students who are doing well can strengthen fluency, accuracy, and confidence through this approach.

Orton-Gillingham aligns with decades of research on how the brain learns to read. By directly teaching the structure of language and reinforcing learning through multiple senses and repeated practice, students develop lasting skills rather than relying on memorization or guessing strategies. The result is stronger decoding, improved spelling, increased reading confidence, and long-term literacy success.
